Flagstones not only attractive to look at, it's also very durable. It's very strong and doesn't crack easily. A natural flagstone patio or walkway can last for many years and doesn't require any special maintenance work. Some people prefer to use wood and build a patio type deck, but one problem with wooden patios is that it can get destroyed easily. If termites attack the wooden patio/deck, then it's just a matter of time before you'd need to have it rebuild it all again. You wouldn't experience this type of problem when you lay a flagstone patio.

Some people use concrete that's stamped with a pattern. The problem with stamped concrete is it doesn't look natural at all. Frankly, concrete stamped patio look cheap. You may or may not save money using stamped concrete for a patio. Laying Flagstone: If you are in the process of designing a walkway for your home or you are redesigning your old walkway, then you should seriously consider using flagstones and laying a beautiful flagstone walkway. Because they are flat and durable, flagstones are the perfect material to use for walkways and even patios. Laying flagstone can requires more work then it takes to lay cement patio stones, but the end results is well worth the extra effort.

The real reason why many people prefer these kinds of stones is because of their inherent beauty. When light falls on these stones, they give off a shimmer that is simply delightful to the eyes.

These flagstones come in a variety of colors. You can find flagstones in red, blue, green, gray and even white. Try mixing and matching different colors when laying the flagstone, this will help give a unique look to your walkway. These stones also come in different shapes and sizes. The best thing to do is to put irregularly shapes stones together to form unique geometric patterns.

If you want a walkway with a more classical look, then you can simply keep all the straight edges of the stones to the outside. You can also use bricks and other materials for the edges. You can also choose flagstones with a more uniform shape and size so you can fit them snugly together so they will have a more formal look when laid out.

Some people prefer a more natural look in their walkway. To do this, you simply have to leave wide spaces when laying  flagstone, put plants flowers or whatever you like in between them. It is important though that you choose a plant or flower that can withstand heavy traffic. To make your walkway look natural, you should make it curved instead of straight.

So remember, when you are planning to install a walkway or redesign your current one, flagstones are the way to go because of their inherent beauty and durability.

The most obvious reason for using natural materials like flagstone is the fact that they are, of course, more attractive than synthetic ones.

Flagstone always adds natural beauty to any path/walkway, but many people feel that it something only a professional can do.Installing a flagstone walkway just like the one below should only take you one or two days even if you’ve never installed flagstone before. Here is the Flagstone walkway after 8 hours of work, during these 8 hours I hauled the old interlocking brick  to the dump and picked up the flagstone and all material required. Once I had all pieces of flagstone ready I installed the walkway.

Most patios are installed in the back yard and attached to the house, giving homeowners a beautiful outdoor sitting and eating area that they can access without walking across the garden. Before deciding on the location and size of your patio, I recommend taking into account what area is most unused, most private from the neighbors if you have any, shelter from the wind and what area is going to have the best view.

One common mistake many people make when installing a flagstone patio is making it far to small. When designing the shape and size, don’t forget take into account the amount of space a table and chairs will take up.

The patio doesn’t need to be rectangular or square, irregular flagstone patios look beautiful with curves  and flares. Take a look at the surrounding area. Do you see lots of straight lines or curves?

Maybe you have flowerbed that all have straight edges, it doesn’t take much work to turn a flowerbed into a curves/rounded flowerbed, altering the surrounding area to fit the patio shape/design is another option.

To help keep the formality of the walkway design, try keep all straight edges to the outside or use some form of geometric edging like dimensional wall stones or maybe interlocking bricks. If the flagstone is fitted tightly and has a nice clean edge the walkway will have a beautiful yet formal appearance.

Flagstone that’s spaced out more widely creates a more rustic looking walkway, but is often easier to install and gives you the option of growing plants or grass between the flagstone walkway. Thyme and moss works great in walkways because they can withstand high traffic.

Straight or Curved Walkway?

Curved walkways are far more natural looking and pleasing to the human eye, curves are often necessary when working around flowerbeds, trees and other objects. Visualizing the design of a flagstone walkway that contains curves and flares is often done using garden hose pipes. Using the garden hose to simulate the outer edge of the walkway.

A flagstone walkway that’s installed correctly is going to be nice and sturdy, whether it’s installed in cement on a concrete base, dry laid and installed in sand or crushed limestone. Installing flagstone in cement is generally the more expensive and time consuming but it will be maintenance free for years to come. A dry laid walkway often requires a small amount of maintenance pulling weeds and sweeping.

When installing a flagstone walkway it’s important you know what your doing, if it’s the first time you’ve installed flagstone then it’s important you avoid making any of the following 5 mistakes.

1: Walkway Width – This is one of the most common mistakes people make. The walkway width looks fine until the whole project is completed and they walk down the walkway side by side with there partner for the first time. Yes you guessed it, it’s not wide enough for two people to walk down at the same time.

2: Purchasing Flagstone – Never just pick up the phone and call your local stone supplier to order flagstone. Not one pallet of flagstone the same , each pallet is unique, some are good and some are bad, it’s important that you physically see the exact pallet or rows of flagstone your going to buy.

3: Walkway Grade – When installing a walkway always make sure the final height of the flagstone is slightly higher than the surrounding area, if it’s level or lower than the surrounding area the water run-off will have a hard time finding a place to go or end up turning your walkway into a shallow stream during a heavy rainfall. Always try divert any water run off away from your house.

4: Flagstone Base – Flagstone needs a solid and well compacted base, not using enough material for the walkway base will only result in problems down the road. After a short time you will see flagstone start sinking and slowly spreading out in different directions.

5: Lack Of Knowledge – A DIY flagstone walkway is not hard to complete, but doing it yourself still means spending money on material. Not knowing how to install your walkway correctly can end up costing you more money and time than you may expect.
