I wanted to share with you a flagstone project that I completed in 3 different stages. Pictures from stage 2 of this project are whats contained in my How To Lay Flagstone guide.

Below is a short video taken with my iphone, it’s not the greatest quality but it should give you a clear picture on the type of flagstone work that I do, would love to hear your comments and questions.

Stage 1: Front & Side Flagstone Walkway

Originally the front walkway was a poorly installed flagstone path, along the side of the house they had a narrow brick walkway. I was asked to replace both walkways and install a dry laid irregular flagstone walkway. “click images to enlarge”

Stage 2: Flagstone Patio, Natural Stone Step & Two Small Dry Stacked Walls

As you can see in the first picture below the back garden was just grass. They wanted to have a flagstone patio area allowing them a place to sit and relax. Due to the change in grade from the flagstone walkway to the patio area, I decided to install a natural stone step, plus install two small dry laid wall on both sides of the patio.

The owners has a rear garage/shed as you can see below, only problem was to access you would need to walk across the lawn/grass. They also asked if it was possible to make one of the dry stacked walls higher allowing them a place to sit or place flower pot etc.

When rebuilding the wall I glued the last 3 rows of stone to help strengthen the wall, then I installed natural stone copping on the top of both walls. We then decided to continue with the wall around the tree flower bed.

Few final notes:

All flagstone joints/gaps are filled with a polymeric sand to stop the rain washing out the joints.
All of the stone used on this project is the same kind, it varies in color depending on the layer it’s been split at, plus like most natural stones the sun with bleach/fade of time.

Once the snow has melted and the warmer weather sets in, I’ll be creating another guide that covers installing flagstone in cement, the guide show you exactly how I lay flagstone over a walkway and front entrance steps. I’m going to attempt creating videos as I complete the stone work as I personally find it’s far easier to learn watching someone rather than reading instructions.

Wondering what flagstone looks like installed in cement?

Below are a few pictures of a project I complete late in 2010, the first few pictures show you the original  flagstone walkway and steps. All of the old flagstone and cement was cleaned off down  to the concrete base. I then installed new flagstone and ledge rock for the step risers.

Flagstones not only attractive to look at, it's also very durable. It's very strong and doesn't crack easily. A natural flagstone patio or walkway can last for many years and doesn't require any special maintenance work. Some people prefer to use wood and build a patio type deck, but one problem with wooden patios is that it can get destroyed easily. If termites attack the wooden patio/deck, then it's just a matter of time before you'd need to have it rebuild it all again. You wouldn't experience this type of problem when you lay a flagstone patio.

Some people use concrete that's stamped with a pattern. The problem with stamped concrete is it doesn't look natural at all. Frankly, concrete stamped patio look cheap. You may or may not save money using stamped concrete for a patio. If you really want to install a patio that you will enjoy using and that you can show off to friends and family then I recommend you look into laying flagstones. Craig How To Flagstone

Laying Flagstone: If you are in the process of designing a walkway for your home or you are redesigning your old walkway, then you should seriously consider using flagstones and laying a beautiful flagstone walkway. Because they are flat and durable, flagstones are the perfect material to use for walkways and even patios. Laying flagstone can requires more work then it takes to lay cement patio stones, but the end results is well worth the extra effort.

The real reason why many people prefer these kinds of stones is because of their inherent beauty. When light falls on these stones, they give off a shimmer that is simply delightful to the eyes.

These flagstones come in a variety of colors. You can find flagstones in red, blue, green, gray and even white. Try mixing and matching different colors when laying the flagstone, this will help give a unique look to your walkway. These stones also come in different shapes and sizes. The best thing to do is to put irregularly shapes stones together to form unique geometric patterns.

If you want a walkway with a more classical look, then you can simply keep all the straight edges of the stones to the outside. You can also use bricks and other materials for the edges. You can also choose flagstones with a more uniform shape and size so you can fit them snugly together so they will have a more formal look when laid out.

Some people prefer a more natural look in their walkway. To do this, you simply have to leave wide spaces when laying  flagstone, put plants flowers or whatever you like in between them. It is important though that you choose a plant or flower that can withstand heavy traffic. To make your walkway look natural, you should make it curved instead of straight.

So remember, when you are planning to install a walkway or redesign your current one, flagstones are the way to go because of their inherent beauty and durability.

People who are looking for the perfect material for a high end patio definitely should consider using flagstones. Using artificial or synthetic materials for your patio is not advisable. The most obvious reason for using natural materials like flagstone is the fact that they are, of course, more attractive than synthetic ones.

Flagstones are an excellent choice because of their natural beauty. This material lends an air of elegance to any project. Flagstones are especially ideal for patio areas and walkways because of their appearance and inherent durability. Using these kinds of stones will surely provide a natural elegance to your home.

One of the reasons why people prefer flagstones over other kinds of materials is its natural vintage look. These stones come in many different colors such as grey, red, blue, green and even white. They have a certain kind of shimmer that is quite pleasing to the eye. Visit the Portage Park in Chicago and you would understand why flagstone is being spoken of so highly by a lot of people. This place has decorations all done up by using flagstone. Castles in England, Wales and Scotland have enough quantities of this wonder stone. So really, flagstone’s correlation to modern day architecture is not surprising at all! But that being said, a lot of flagstone’s popularity came through from ancient times when contractors didn’t mind using this stone for constructing apartments and castles.

The way it is found in nature, it is also known as flat stone. The multitude of uses of flagstone comes to the fore when you know they are also used in cemeteries. These stones are used in cemeteries to make memorials or headstones on the top of a person’s grave. What people didn’t know about flagstone was that it is also known as Pennsylvania Bluestone.

Flagstone is not a stone that is rare, it’s something you could easily purchase in a city near to you. The types of flagstone available may vary depending on what part of the country you live in and what type the stone supplier has in stock.

One of the interesting aspects of flagstone, is that they hardly permeate water. This makes them an excellent product to be used on patios and walkways. Flagstone always adds natural beauty to any path/walkway, but many people feel that it something only a professional can do. Installing a flagstone walkway just like the one below should only take you one or two days even if you’ve never installed flagstone before. Here is the Flagstone walkway after 8 hours of work, during these 8 hours I hauled the old interlocking brick  to the dump and picked up the flagstone and all material required. Once I had all pieces of flagstone ready I installed the walkway.

Most patios are installed in the back yard and attached to the house, giving homeowners a beautiful outdoor sitting and eating area that they can access without walking across the garden. Before deciding on the location and size of your patio, I recommend taking into account what area is most unused, most private from the neighbors if you have any, shelter from the wind and what area is going to have the best view.

One common mistake many people make when installing a flagstone patio is making it far to small. When designing the shape and size, don’t forget take into account the amount of space a table and chairs will take up.

The patio doesn’t need to be rectangular or square, irregular flagstone patios look beautiful with curves  and flares. Take a look at the surrounding area. Do you see lots of straight lines or curves?

Maybe you have flowerbed that all have straight edges, it doesn’t take much work to turn a flowerbed into a curves/rounded flowerbed, altering the surrounding area to fit the patio shape/design is another option.
